Quartet Night 2017

Wayfarers Chorus Quartet NightThe annual Wayfarers Quartet Night took place on Tuesday 21 November and saw a record equalling entry of seven quartets hoping to become the judge’s favourite.  Due to the unfortunate demise of the previous year’s winning quartet there was no mic warmer this year, so instead Colin Wayte invited the chorus onto the risers for a warm up and to sing a couple of our repertoire songs for the packed audience.

The guest judge this year was Allen Whitely, the M.D. of of one of our local church choirs.  I’m not sure whether he knew what he was letting himself in for but he did an excellent job, keeping track of all the performances and retaining his sense of humour.

After all seven quartets had performed and the scores had been totted up, the judge provided a brief critique of each quartet before announcing the winner.  Apparently, in best competition tradition, it had been a “very difficult decision” but in the end the vote went to ‘Acapella Fellas’, whose performance was said to be worthy of the stage (perhaps he meant pantomime).

Prizes were awarded, thanks were given to Mr and Mrs Whitely and the massed ranks of audience and choir gathered to sing the traditional evening closer ‘Lets get together again’.  Who needs Last Night of the Proms!

Acapella Fellas will now become the mic warmers for next year, giving the opportunity for other fame seekers to take the top prize.

Practice makes perfect as they say, so if you were in one of the unsuccessful quartets you now have 12 months to practice your winning songs for the next quartet night.
